THIS TIME FOR SURE- SMOKERS, smoke your lungs out while you can!!!!

There is so much going on in the world of tobacco control via our Advocacy efforts. I wanted to share some highlights.

Below is an ACS Media Alert on the proposed legislation in the US Congress to give the FDA regulatory control over tobacco products sold in our country. This is great legislation that has a real chance this Congressional Session. See below.

At the state level, I wanted to let folks know that the proposed tobacco tax increase legislation has passed two hurdles thus far. It has passed out of two committees and is now heading a to the Joint Ways and Means Committee. The bill has been amended but it still contains an 84 and half cent increase on tobacco and provides 10% of the revenue generated from this tax for tobacco prevention and education programs. At this time the first full floor vote on this legislation looks to be in early March.

Attached is an article from today's Oregonian about what is happening so far. www.oregonlive.com/news/ore...index.ssf

Also Oregon's Smoke-Free legislation is having its first hearing in Eugene tomorrow. This legislation would make all work places smoke-free. We have high hopes that this legislation will pass this year.

Attached is a recent article that was printed after we held a press conference on Monday to introduce the bill.

Whew! If all three of these policies happen, we could see some real decline in the amount of children that start smoking and the amount of adults that do smoke. What a great thing that would be!!

I want to encourage all staff to get signed up for ACS CAN, so you can get the Action Alerts that we send out, so you can tell your federal lawmakers to pass the FDA bill and tell your state lawmakers to increase the tobacco tax and to make Oregon a smoke-free state. Go to www.acscan.org to learn more.
